PRCPTION Travel presents the Unity Primary’s first Album
Unity Primary’s first Album is here!
Jordan Urbanovich, President and Executive Director of PRCPTION Travel, was in Jamaica teaching music last fall to help start a creativity program at the Unity Primary School. The school’s principal had managed to organize a corporate donation of musical instruments, with guitars, a xylophone, recorders, and lots of percussion.
Jordan explains: “Just like kids anywhere, the kids there in rural Jamaica had so much creative energy flowing through them, but if often wasn’t channeled properly–so it manifested as disobedience in the classroom or rowdiness. But really, they’re just kids wanting to have fun and create! Good students are good students, but what about the not-so-academic types? The principal knew they needed a creative outlet and a means for self-motivation. So that’s why she started this creative program for them. It didn’t take long for me to see how talented the kids were”.
They started writing songs for fun. During Jordan’s last week there, they used his little Zoom H4n field mic to record a pretty basic CD.
Jordan later posted to Reddit seeing if any audio producers or DJs would want to make remixes using the acapellas of the kids’ singing. He received about 50 offers but only 3 came through. One from LA, one from Boise, and one from Berlin.
One of the remixes is Check Out Dis by Styles In Black. As he says: “The vocal recordings you hear are pieces of the songs these kids wrote. I then grabbed my bass, rhodes piano, guitar, and beats to create a song around these samples. I had a lot of fun working with these recordings. It was a great opportunity to expand my own musical horizons while helping the kids to realize the possibilities inherent in their own musical potential.”

They have also written a grant proposal to raise funds to return to Jamaica to continue this project.
The goal is to set up a 3-week creative workshop next year, where they’ll write and record a proper CD with Styles in Black as their resident audio engineer. As Jordan says: “At that retreat we’ll also be teaching the kids social media with tablets and phones we’ll donate, so they will have a chance to continue recording their music and stories that they come up with. We’ll document the whole thing as a short documentary, and the kids will have a chance to learn a bit about social media marketing skills they can bring into their local economies.”
